The Garbo Lamp at the Heart of the Circle
Why dancers orbit a single flame.
The word "Garba" comes from garbo — a perforated earthen pot holding a lamp, placed at the center of the circle.
Light within clay
The lamp glowing through the pot's holes is an image of the divine within the body, and of the womb of creation. Dancers circle it the way planets circle a sun.
Worship in motion
To dance the circle is to orbit that light again and again, until the line between celebration and prayer dissolves.
